What is Kung Fu?

Kung Fu is the original martial art and comes from China. Many other martial arts have evolved from the spread of Kung Fu styles throughout the world. Karate is a Japanese style that originated from China and Tae Kwon Do is the Korean art that is about 50 years old and came from the Korean Military style Tang So Do. Tang So Do also is derived from Chinese Kung Fu. Karate uses the hand techiques from Kung Fu and Tae kwon do focuses on the kicking techniques from Kung Fu

Kung Fu, meaning "hard work", is strictly a Chinese Martial Art and is the oldest of all martial arts. It has been in existence for over 4,500 years. Many different styles of Kung Fu come from the movements of animals, birds and insects. As they developed in different regions of China, they began to take on their own distinct characteristics. The Southern region emphasizes upper body and hand techniques, whereas the Northern styles incorporate low stances and acrobatic kicks. The many aspects of Kung Fu include body and mind toughening, self defense, hand forms, weapons, philosophy, and herbal medicine.

Do Wah Lum students wear a uniform?

For ages 6 & up, the uniform consists of a black Wah Lum T-Shirt, black kung fu pants, black kung fu shoes, and a black sash.

For Lil' Dragons ages 3-5, the uniform consists of a white Wah Lum Lil' Dragons T-Shirt, black kung fu pants, and a black sash. Lil' Dragons can wear their own tennis shoes or they can purchase kung fu shoes. We do not require Lil' Dragons to purchase Kung Fu shoes due to the fact their shoe size is constantly changing.

Does Wah Lum have a Belt System?

Wah Lum Kung Fu is a traditional Chinese Martial Art, in traditional Kung Fu there are no belt ranking. Everyone wears a black sash. The purpose of the sash is to give back support and to help focus breathing. If you visit a Wah Lum School you may see some individuals with a "Gold" sash, this in not a ranking or status, it is used so beginner students and parents know who to go to with questions.
